November 6, 2016. Two days before the presidential election. Hillary Clinton is a shoo in to be the first female President of the United States. Yeah! Chill the champagne, it’s about time!
Flash forward to election day. Hillary is…wait, what?? Donald Trump is President of the United States? But, what happened? Some stayed home (remember the shoo in?), some voted for Gary Johnson or Jill Stein as a protest vote, and some voted for Trump to make a change.
Now, six months later, America really is a different place! I don’t even need to list the ways. You know. We have marched, we have protested, we have cried. But now it is time to look forward and effect some real change. Some positive change. May 6. Six months into this new reality. It’s election time again.
Change can start in Texas. With you. And dozens of progressive candidates who have stepped forward to say “I will fight for you.” And we must fight for them. For change begins at home; and school board members run for Governor one day. And maybe even President. One. Day.
March On! Texas has asked for YOU to tell us who walks the walk (dare we say, Marches the March?) and you came through. You gave us 50+ candidates who are running for local office in the May 6 elections…City Council, School Board, Mayor. Thankless jobs that often fly under the radar and yet make a difference in the lives of Marchers and our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.
All the candidates Marchers suggested are listed here, with the information necessary to check their progressive creds. Some candidates, found here, were able to give us additional info. While they are all unique, they share progressive values you can support. Let’s help get them elected!
Crunch Time. We have barely 4 weeks to get progressive candidates elected! So here is what you can do:
Find a candidate in your area or someone in road trip distance. Find out what they need (ask the campaign, you won’t have to ask twice!) and go do it! Be ready to:
- Help stuff envelopes
- Make phone calls
- Put those marching shoes on and knock on doors
- Distribute signs
- Donate. Campaigns take money, even in smaller communities, so ask your friends to kick in. We learned before the March that if enough people donate $5-10, you can make history!
Right now, many of you are feeling frustrated and maybe feeling like giving up. And March On! knows it has been tough. But, we CAN make a difference. We CAN turn Texas blue. One foot in front of the other, one step at a time, together we can do it. It begins with you. And it begins NOW.
